“Alla-prima” (from an Italian phrase, meaning at first attempt) is a technique used for sketching in oil, which requires a fast way of working in order to represent the visual impression of your subject in front of you, with a limited amount of time, and completed in one sitting.

Students will be working from a different live model each week while being introduced to this fun and informative way of working. The result by the end of the class is a greater facility of painting the portrait from life and a better understanding of the building stages from start to finish.

Emphasis will be placed upon gesture, proportion and how to organize value relationships with a sophisticated and strategic eye in order achieve a focal point and show the character of the sitter in a limited amount of time.

Each week students will be introduced to a new set of challenges as the repeated practice over the 8 week class will make for increased ability. We will learn how to see specific half tone shapes and properly compress them within their value group in order to achieve a unified sketch.

Students will be working in close proximity to the model and alongside the instructor as each stage of the process is explained and demonstrated. Daily discussions and lectures will be given on various topics, as well as personalized instruction specific to the individual’s level and needs.
